I am amazed at how many folks in the workplace contemplate or complain about how things might, could or should be, yet don't take any steps to change it.
I once heard the saying, "If it is to be, it is up to me." I believe this. If you want to make a change in your life, or want something different to happen, you have to take the initiative to do something about it.
This advice is so straightforward it almost seems trivial to re-state here. So why is it so hard to take initiative? Probably because it's work, it's change, it requires sitting still and planning.
Here in Seattle a woman recently landed a job at a country radio station because she incessantly lobbied the morning on-air team with voice messages, performance samples and miscellaneous contributions until they took notice. Once they did, she followed through and made them an offer to just give her a try. They did and she got the job. She's now part of a popular morning radio program and made the leap from small time, to big time radio. She took initiative.
While you won't always get what you want from life or your job. One thing you won't get is results if you don't take the first step. It's the New Year (still). Take the time to take the initiative to start something new, do something different.
